The Prime Minister has appealed to the people to maintain peace and calm and desist from violence in the aftarmath of the Delhi gang-rape incident. In a nation-wide televised address Dr. Manmohan Singh said, the anger at such a crime is justified but violence will solve no purpose. He said, the government will look into all aspects concerning the security of women and the delay in response in the Delhi gang rape case.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna has ordered the suspension of two Assistant Commissioners of Police for dereliction of duty in connection with the gang- rape incident in Delhi. Talking to reporters after reviewing the Law and Order situation erupting from the widespread protests, Mr Khanna said that two DCPs have also been called for explanation by the Police Commissioner. He said that the Special Commissioner of Police Sudhir Yadav will act as a nodal officer for looking into women related grievances.
A special help line number 181 is being set up at Delhi Chief Minister's office for women in distress to be operational before the end of this month.
The Centre has convened a meeting of Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police of all States on 4th of next month to discuss crime against women. Talking to media persons in New Delhi, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde asserted that all demands and suggestions of agitators have been heard and all measures are being taken to stop the recurrence of crime against women.
Delhi Police has filed cases against Former Army chief V K Singh and yoga guru Ramdev for inciting the mob and provoking the crowds at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
Meanwhile, a BJP delegation led by senior party leader L.K Adwani met the President Mr. Pranab Mukherjee last evening on the issue of crimes against women. Talking to reporters after the meeting, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said that her party has requested the President for a special session of Parliament to make a stringent law against sexual assaults.
