The Prime Minister announced one lakh rupees life insurance cover for poor under the 'Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana'. This will help poor farmers to get rid of their debt which many times force them to commit suicide.
In his first ever address to the nation, from the ramparts of historic Red Fort after unfurling the national flag, the Prime Minister said, he wants to expedite the nation building process by encouraging the capabilities of government functionaries. The Prime Minister appealed to militants and Maoists to shun violence. Prime Minister exhorted the people to undertake at least ten-year moratorium on communal, caste and class violence. He asked the people maintain peace and harmony to take the country ahead.
Expressing anguish over incidents of rape, Mr. Modi said his head hangs in shame due to these incidents. He termed the female feoticide as a blot on the 21st century India and asked the parents not to kill daughters in the womb. He commended sports persons for bringing laurels to the nation in international sporting events.
