PM announces Rs 1000 crore for U’khand’s relief; Two lakh rupees each granted to families of those killedrelief

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh announced one thousand crore rupees for disaster relief for the flood affected people of Uttarakhand. Out of this, 145 crore rupees will be given immediately to flood-hit state. Ex-gratia assistance of 2 lakh rupees each will be given to the families of those who lost their lives and 50 thousand each to the injured from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.

Those whose houses have been completely destroyed, will get ex-gratia assistance of one lakh rupees each and the people whose houses have been damaged, will be given 50 thousand rupees each.

The relief and rehabilitation package was announced by the Prime Minister in New Delhi, soon after conducting an aerial survey of the flood ravaged areas of the state, along with UPA Chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi.

Announcing the package after meeting Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna, Dr. Singh directed Central Agencies to render all possible assistance to the State.

He said, the priority for the authorities at the moment is to rescue the stranded and provide urgently needed succor to those who need it most.

Prime Minister put the death toll at 102 on the basis of latest estimates and said, loss of lives could eventually be much higher as many more are feared dead.

He said, over ten thousand people have been rescued and are being provided food, clothing and shelter so far and many persons are still stranded. Dr. Singh said, the Central and State Governments have deployed all possible resources to deal with post-flood situation.

He said, about 5500 Jawans and Officers of the Army, 3000 men of the Border Roads Organisation and 600 ITBP personnel are engaged in relief and rescue work. Besides, thirteen teams of the National Disaster Response Force are also deployed.

The Air Force has deployed 18 helicopters and a C-130 aircraft. The State Government is also utilizing the services of private helicopters for relief work.
