The government has agreed to the setting up of a Joint Parliamentary Committee to probe into the 2G spectrum scam. Announcing this in the Lok Sabha today the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said that a formal resolution in this regard will be moved soon. He requested the Speaker Mrs. Meira Kumar to proceed with the formation of a JPC. Referring to the winter session of parliament being lost due to the controversy, Dr Manmohan Singh said that the country can ill afford a situation where Parliament is paralysed and important legislative business is not allowed. He said under these special circumstances the government agreed to the setting up a JPC after it failed to persuade the opposition to give up its demand. Reiterating the government is committed to root out corruption he said that the government has acted expeditiously and transparently on the issue. Listing the measures taken by the government on the issue Dr. Singh said that the CBI investigation is being conducted under the supervision of the Supreme Court even as the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament is seized of the matter. He also said that the report of the justice Shivraj Patil which went into the issue is also in public domain. Soon after the Prime minister made his statement, the opposition party leader in lok sabha Mrs Sushma Swaraj, welcomed the government decision and said it should not seen a victory or a defeat of any one party, but a victory of democracy. Mulayam Singh Yadav of Smajwadi Party said that with the announcement regarding the JPC, proper outcome can be expected . Gurudas Dasgupta of CPI said that it is better late than never.
