PM announces 300 cr relief package for violence-hit Assam

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has announced a 300 crore rupees relief package for violence hit districts of Assam. He also announced two lakh rupees from the PM's National Relief Fund to families of those killed in the violence. Fifty thousand rupees have also been announced for the seriously injured and thirty thousand for those whose homes have been completely damaged in the violence. Kokrajhar, he termed violence as a blot on the face of the nation. Prime minister asserted that cause of the conflict should be addressed and there will be the ethnic conflict must come to a stop. He said, the violence in Assam is unacceptable and added that the immediate challenge is to provide a healing touch to the victims.

The 300 crore rupees package for Assam announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh includes 100 crore rupees for relief and rehabilitation in the worst affected strife-torn districts. The Prime minister made the announcment while speaking to newsmen after visiting the affected areas in Kokrajhar District this morning. Dr Singh said, 100 crore rupees is earmarked for development works in the violence-hit areas. He said another 100 crore rupees will also be made available under the Indira Awas Yojana for the affected areas.

He said, the Centre is closely working with the state government to provide a sense of security to the people in the violence-marred districts. He also assured that the Centre will do everything possible to bring relief to the affected people living in relief camps.
