Planning Commission to provide new BPL nos to govt

The Planning Commission has said it will provide the new poverty number to the government based on the Suresh Tendulkar report. It will also present to the government the financial implications of implementing the food security law. <br/> <br/>Commission member Abhijit Sen said, they have already accepted the Tendulkar committee report on poverty estimation. <br/> <br/>The Commission has been asked by the empowered group of ministers on food to suggest number of BPL families who could be provided subsidised foodgrain under the proposed Food Security law. <br/> <br/>The Commission at its meeting last Saturday had accepted the new methodology for computing poverty suggested by the Tendulkar committee, which include spending on health and education besides food. <br/> <br/>The increase in the number of BPL families is significant as the government proposes to provide 25 kg rice or wheat per month to each BPL family at 3 rupees per kg. <br/> <br/>Later, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi pressed for providing 35 kg of food under the proposed law, as is currently being given to ration card holders.<br/><br/>
