Planning Commission has set up a committee to suggest ways and means for reforms in the power sector. The Committee to be headed by former CAG, V.K. Shunglu has been asked to submit its report by the end of the September this year. Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia said, the recommendations of the Shunglu Committee will be implemented after consultations with State Chief Ministers. He was addressing a conference of the State Power Ministers in New Delhi. Mr. Ahluwalia advocated two tier tariff for the peak and non-peak hour.Addressing the conference, Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde called for improving governance in the power sector and curbing pilferages to bring down losses. He said, there are stringent provisions to deal with the power thefts and pilferages and so far 23 States have set up special courts to deal with these problems. Moreover, 11 States have come up with Special Police Stations to tackle power thefts effectively. Mr Shinde said, while every State is free to give subsidies to farmers and other weaker sections, it is essential that State governments run the power utilities on commercial basis as per the electricity act. Minister of State for Power K.C. Venugopal also addressed the day long conference and called for promoting usage of energy efficient machines in the agriculture sector.
