Prof. P.J. Kurien of the Congress was unanimously elected today as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. This was announced by
Chairman Mohd. Hamid Ansari. Leader of the House and Prime Mini ster,Dr. Manmohan Singh proposed his name to the post which was seconded by the Leader of Opposition Mr. Arun Jaitley.
Professor P.J. Kurien represents Kerala in the Rajya Sabha >, He has been in the national parliament for the last three decades representing Idukki, and Mavelikkara Lok Sabha constituencies, and since 2005, is a member of the Rajya Sabha .
Congratulating Prof. Kurien, the Chairman Mr Ansari said that he was an able administrator and Parliamentarian.
The Prime Minister said the unanimous election of Prof. Kurien reflects the wide support of the members. Dr Singh also praised Prof. Kurien for his experience and assured support to him in the conduct of the House proceedings.
The Leader of Opposition, Mr Arun Jaitley said Prof. Kurien is one of most experienced parliamentarians. He is regarded as a universal
friend. Leaders of all political parties and groups in the House congratulated Prof. Kurien on his election. Responding to the felicitations, Prof. Kurien thanked the members for electing him as Deputy Chairman.
