Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Nirmal Verma today said that piracy has been arrested in the Indian Ocean region and several assets are being added to the Armory of Indian Navy to tackle any situation at the sea. Addressing his last press conference in New Delhi today Admiral Verma said that piracy had also spread in East Arabian Sea from horn of African to Indian waters in 2009-10. He asserted that over the past one year not a single incident of piracy has been reported within 300 nautical miles of Indian waters.
Talking of terrorism at sea he said that it is imperative for the Navy to remain open for uncertainties. He said that talks are on between India and Pakistan to follow some protocols to prevent incidents at sea. On China he said that there is a need to engage in discussion. Elaborating India's interest in blue waters the Admiral said that country's interest lies from Malacca's straits to Gulf in West put on down south cape of good hope. As for as soft China Sea is concerned, he said India has no plans to deploy its naval assets there as it has to complete its unfinished staff in the Indian Ocean region. Admiral Verma is superannuating on the 31st of this month. He joined as Chief of Naval staff in 2009. Vice Admiral D.K.Joshi will take over as the next Chief of Naval staff.
