The Philippines, still reeling from Typhoon Ketsana, is now preparing for super typhoon Parma. The first storm less than a week ago killed at least 293 people in and around Manila, but soldiers and civilian emergency teams on the main island of Luzon are on alert again. Typhoon Parma is already packing winds of 175 kilometres per hour and gathering strength. Forecasters fear the winds could be as high as 200 kilometres per hour by the time it hits land. The winds are expected to cause quite severe damage and are predicted to move diagonally across the northern Philippines through one of the main rice-producing areas. It is likely there will be significant damage to farming land and dwellings in the slums. The typhoon is predicted to hit tomorrow and while Manila is expected to be spared, it is still likely to receive the very heavy rains experienced a week ago.
