Philippines: Thousands of families evacuated as typhoon Megi heads towards Cagayan province

Thousands of families in the northern Philippines have been evacuated as typhoon Megi intensified by gathering more strength and moved toward the country's Cagayan province. An official of Cagayan province today said the residents along the river banks and coastal areas have left their homes and authorities have opened four evacuation centers for them. According to the country's National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Committee, in areas affected by typhoon Megi, classes in schools will be suspended tomorrow. Philippine President Benigno Aquino III has advised the public and local disaster risk reduction managers to prepare and take precautionary measures before Megi's landfall. With maximum winds of 160 kilometers per hour near the centre and gusts of up to 195 kilometers per hour, Megi is expected to make landfall over Cagayan province by tomorrow. The typhoon was 630 kilometers east of the province this morning.
