In the Philippines, suspected Muslim militants have attacked a jail in Isabela, capital of Basilan province and freed 31 inmates. One guard and one militant were killed during the gun battle before the assailants destroyed a concrete wall, freeing the inmates. Among those who escaped were two leaders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front who were detained for their alleged role in beheading of several soldiers on Basilan in 2007. Local officials say about 30 armed men attacked the jail in the middle of the night.
