In Philippines, more than 150 inmates escaped from a prison, after gunmen launched an attack, killing one guard. Jail warden Peter John Bonggat said that at least 158 prisoners had escaped when more than 100 armed men attacked the North Cotabato District Jail near Kidapawan city, on the island of Mindanao.

He said the attackers were believed to be a breakaway faction of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the nation's largest Muslim rebel organisation that is in peace talks with the government. Bonggat said the jail, which housed 1,511 inmates, lacked guards and was a dilapidated former school building located in a forested, secluded area. Philippine military and police have launched a manhunt for the escaped inmates and recaptured at least six of them.
