The pharmaceutical market in India is expected to be worth 55 billion US dollars by 2020, becoming the sixth largest market globally in absolute size, the Indian envoy to the United States has said. Speaking at an event in New York, India's ambassador to the US Arun Singh said that branded generics dominate the pharmaceuticals market, constituting nearly 70 to 80 per cent of the market. He said that India is the largest provider of generic drugs globally with the Indian generics accounting for 20 per cent of global exports in terms of volume. Congressman Lee Zeldin said that Indian-Americans constitute about one per cent of the country's population, but they account for nine per cent of the American doctors and physicians, serving one out of seven patients being treated across the United States.
