Prices of petrol and diesel have been reduced by two rupees a litre. The new rates came into effect midnight last night. Now, petrol will cost 66 rupees 90 paise per litre in Delhi, 71 rupees 57 paise in Kolkata, 71 rupees 97 paise in Mumbai and 67 rupees 29 paise in Chennai. For Diesel, consumer will have to pay 49 rupees 72 paise per litre in Delhi, 52 rupees 75 paise in Kolkata, 55 rupees 15 paise in Mumbai and 51 rupees 8 paise in Chennai. In a statement, Indian Oil Corporation said that the decision has been taken in view of decline in crude oil prices in the international market. Meanwhile, Delhi government has increased the VAT on petrol from present 20 to 25 percent and on diesel from 12.5 to 16.6 percent effective from midnight last night. BJP and Congress have slammed the AAP government's decision to hike VAT on petrol and diesel in Delhi. They said it was done to meet the Delhi government's 526-crore rupees publicity budget. BJP claimed it had foreseen the situation when the ruling AAP had raised the VAT cap by passing an amendment Bill during the Budget Session of Delhi Assembly.Congress leader Ajay Maken also said that AAP government increased VAT by 4% on Diesel and 5% on Petrol to meet its publicity budget. Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta described the hike in VAT as an example of cheating and fraud by the Kejriwal government.
