Petition challenging govt move to exempt CBI from RTI Act’s ambit dismissed

The Madras High Court on Friday dismissed a petition challenging recent Government move to exempt the Central Bureau of Investigation, CBI from the ambit of Right to Information Act, 2005.

A CBI spokesperson in a statement issued in Chennai today said that Chief Justice of the High Court in his judgement has pronounced that the notification issued by the Centre exempting CBI from RTI is valid on the grounds of national security and intelligence. The Court saw no justification in interfering in the matter.

Government on 9th of June had brought the CBI, National Investigation Agency and NATGRID under second schedule of section 24 of the RTI Act which exempts security and intelligence organisations from the jurisdiction of RTI Act.
