Swach Bharat Mission Director Dr. Nipun Vinayak has said that there is a perceptible change in the implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission in the country. Speaking on the sidelines of a session in National Science Congress that concludes in Mysuru today, he said focus has shifted from building of toilets to that of a stress on behavioral change.

He disclosed that over 3.5 million toilets built earlier are not being used due to lack of behavioral change. He added that the target is not how many toilets are being built, but how many villages have become free of open defecation. The stake holders who specialize in skilled communication are trained to invoke a sense of shame and disgust to enable behavioral change, he said.

Dr. Nipun Vinayak, the director of Swach Bharat Abhiyan illustrated through a simple example as to how to convince people to change their behavior and adopt healthy practices. He offered a water bottle to the dignitaries after adding a little dust to it.

When the contaminated water was refused, he said that the same does happen due to open defecation when the fly carries the shit and sits on the food prepared in the households. He said open defecation causes diarrhea and pneumonia leading to deaths of several lakh children in the country every year.

Dr.Vinayak said that the district collectors and representatives of panchayats are trained in such skills to effectively disseminate the menace of open defecation. The private partnership through corporate social responsibility is also being used for the purpose.
