People in Ladakh celebrating New Year festival of Losar today

The people in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir are celebrating their new year festival of Losar today. AIR Correspondent reports that people are celebrating the festival in a simple manner keeping in mind the loss of life and property during cloud burst earlier this year. After illumination of all the religious places including monasteries , stupa and residential houses on the eve of Losar last night, today people are visiting monasteries and their nears and dears to greet on the occasion of Losar. Unlike other Himalayan regions of the country , Buddhists of Ladakh celebrate Losar in the11th month of Tibetan lunar calendar which follow in the region ever since 17th century during the King Jamyang Namgail regime . The Losar celebration which usually begins with the observance of birth anniversary of Galwang Tsongkhpa , who was Buddhist saint and founder of yellow sect of Tibetan Buddhism and the celebration will last till 9th of the month which falls on 14 of this month, reported Diwakar Kumar, Yangchan Dolma, AIR News from Leh Ladakh.
