The Election commission today cancelled the by-election to the Pennagaram assembly constituency which was scheduled for the 20th of next month. Speaking to newsmen in Chennai today, the Chief Election Commissioner Mr Naveen Chawla said the new date for the by-election will be announced later. Earlier, the State Chief Electoral Officer Mr Naresh Gupta met the chief Election commissioner and held consultations.<br/>Opposition parties including the Aiadmk had sought postponement of the by-election as it coincided with the pongal festival.<br/>
