PEDA sanctions 36 biomass power plants to generate 350 MW of electricity

Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has sanctioned 36 biomass power plants to generate 350 MW in the State within two years.This was disclosed here today by PEDA Chairman Manjit Singh while presiding over the State level function of Akshay Urja Divas at Pushpa Gujral Science city. Addressing students of various schools and colleges, he said Biomass plants had been installed at village Awan, Phullokhera and Channo Pind in the state.He disclosed that PEDA had received more than ten thousand applications for installation of solar invertors having capacity of 600 watts to 2500 watts.Narrating the details of the solar invertors, PEDA joint Director Ravinder Singh disclosed that 2500 watts inverter to be charged with solar power would cost rupees two lakhs but PEDA would give to the consumers at a subsidized rate of rupees one lakh twenty five thousand.PEDA has been entrusted the task of installation of solar energy power plants in Parliament, Punjab Assembly, Harmandir Sahib , Durgiana temple and Bagha Border at Amritsar said the chairman.Speaking on the occasion, Swaran Singh National Institute of renewable energy institute Director Dr.A.K.Jain said Biomass which include agricultural crop residues, animal wastes, Agro Industrial wastes and Forests wastes and solar power have great potential in the State and twenty percent power demands could be met from these renewable energy sources.Science city Director General Dr R.S.Khandpur disclosed that science city had already set up state level energy park to demonstrate the various forms of non conventional energy sources. He disclosed that science city was setting up 100MW solar power plant which would meet twenty percent electricity demand of the science city.On this occasion various competitions like painting, essay writings and model making on the theme of renewable energy were organized in which more than 300 students from various school and colleges participated.Akshay Urja Divas was also celebrated at Rail Coach Factory Kapurthala where a function was organized at workers club to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who had laid the foundation stone of factory in 1985.
