Peaceful polling on in Tripura; 45 % voting recorded till 1 pm

Polling is continuing peacefully in the first phase of Lok Sabha Election in Tripura. The Left Front ruled Tripura is witnessing a multi-cornered contest between CPI-M, Congress, Trinamool Congress and the BJP.

As many as 45 per cent of voters have already cast their vote for West Tripura Parliamentary constituency. The election is peaceful so far and there is no report of any incidence of violence.

People, particularly tribals with their traditional attire, are seen in long queues at the polling booths. Chief Electoral Officer of Tripura, Ashutosh Jindal told AIR correspondent that 20 per cent of the votes were cast within two hours of polling which began at 7 am today.

Besides State Police, 35 companies of central para-military forces have been deployed to ensure peaceful polling. Indo-Bangladesh border has been sealed and section 144 has been invoked to check the entry of anti-social elements and militants from across the border.

The lone constituency in Tripura where voting is taking place in this phase is Tripura (West).
