India wants a peaceful, stable, and democratic Nepal which is in the interest of both the countries. External Affairs Minister Mr. SM Krishna said the peace process should be brought to speedy fruition. Briefing the media on the delegation level talks held between the visiting External Affairs Minister S.M Krishna and Nepal’s Deputy Prime Minister Bharat Mohan Adhikari ,in Kathmandu the External Affairs spokesman Mr. Vishnu Prakash said the discussions were held in an environment of warmth and mutual respect which is a hallmark of the special relations between the two countries. The Nepali side appreciated India’s role which has been steadfast in it’s support to Nepal in economic development, capacity development, education and in implementing projects in various fields. He said that both sides underlined the trade and economic ties that join the two countries together. The External Affairs Minister underlined that there is a need to create an atmosphere to strengthen these ties and said that there should be a level playing field, and fair treatment for Indian Companies in Nepal. The companies have brought technology, industry, employment opportunities and have been meeting the domestic demand as well as Nepal’s exports.He said that discussions were also held on enhancing mutual security and Nepal has said it will not allow any activity on their territory which is prejudicial to India’s interest. AIR Correspondent reports that The visit of the External Affairs minister the second in thirteen months underlines the highest priority that India accords to it’s relation with Nepal. Both countries share historical, cultural , social ties that are unique and special. At the present juncture which Nepal is facing given the deadline of the peace process and drafting of the new constitution. India hopes that Nepal will be able to bring it to speedy fruition. Besides the Bilateral Investment Protection Agreement, Double Taxation agreement, Mutual assistance treaty which are in the pipeline should be concluded soon. India has also urged the signing of the boundary strips map at the earliest so that the pillars can be erected which would help speed up Nepal’s economic development.The External Affairs Minister today will hold a meeting with officials of Nepal-India Chamber of Commerce and Industries (NICCI) in Kathmandu on the second day of his visit to Nepal. He is to learn about the investment climate and problems faced by them in recent months in face of Maoist protests against Indian joint ventures. India has already made it clear that is against any baseless activities. Mr. S.M Krishna is scheduled to meet Nepali Congress leader Sushil Koirla and other leaders of political parties today.
