PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti meets PM in a bid to end impasse over govt formation in J&K

People's Democratic Party, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence this morning, amid stalemate over government formation in Jammu and Kashmir. Briefing media later after an half hour long meeting, Ms Mufti termed the meeting as very positive and good. She however made no announcements, saying she would take the next steps after meeting her party MLAs in Srinagar.

The meeting is being seen as an effort to renew partnership between PDP and the BJP to form government in the state. The talks between the leadership of both parties had failed last week after BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav publicly refused to accept PDP's conditions on continuation of alliance. The state is under governor's rule since the death of chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

PDP is the largest party with 28 seats – now 27 following Mr Sayeed's death – in the 87-member house. BJP is second with 25 seats. The National Conference has 14, and Congress 12.
