PC to meet on March 20th for mid-term appraisal of 11th Five year plan

The Planning Commission will meet on 20th of this month for a mid-term appraisal of the 11th Five year plan. Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission said this in Mumbai today while addressing the 'Maharashtra Economic Summit'. Dr Ahluwalia said, the meeting, to be attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, will also review the progress of implementation of the plan during the first three years.

He said that the Planning Commission will also hold meetings with the State Governments on 23rd of this month to share the expertise the Planning commission had built on structured public private partnership projects (PPP) in the infrastructure sector. Talking to the reporters on the sidelines of the summit, Dr Ahluwalia said that the government borrowing next year was expected to be at the same level as this fiscal and this should not come in the way of meeting the private credit.

When referred to the increase in Index for Industrial production, he said the numbers are very pleasing. Dr. Ahluwalia said with the economic growth momentum returning, the Planning Commission expects a GDP growth of 8.5 per cent for FY 11 and a nine per cent growth in the subsequent fiscal. He said that the Indian economy has shown a very good resilience.

Admitting that food price inflation is a cause of concern, Dr Ahluwalia attributed it to the exaggerated reports on the drought conditions as one of the reasons. However, with the rabi prospects looking good, he expected the food price inflation to ease within the next couple of months. Replying to another question, he did not expect the inflation to reach double digits and said that the Wholesale Price Index was expected to see a gradual dip in the coming months.
