Pawar: Agri sector may cross 4% growth target during 12th plan period

Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar has said the agriculture sector may cross the 4 per cent growth target during the 12th plan period after witnessing a turn around in last few years. Speaking on the sidelines of a function in New Delhi today, Pawar urged the farm scientists to intensify focus on developing drought resistant crop varieties to free Indian agriculture from its dependence on erractic monsoon. Commenting on the impact of El Nino, the Minister said that it was too early to predict the 2014 monsoon behaviour and the Indian Weather Department will review the scenario in the second week of April. He said the Government is keeping a close watch on it but ruled out any major impact on foodgrain production.
