Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said that the government is committed to bring a strong Lokpal bill. He said, the Lokpal and Lok Ayukta bill was referred to the Select Committee of the Rajya Sabha with the consent of all the major opposition parties.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi today in a post-budget session briefing, he said, the government wanted to pass the bill in the budget session itself but the opposition wanted broader discussions on it.
The Minister said, the motion moved by Samajwadi Party member was in accordance to the rule. Mr. Bansal also said that government and the opposition has narrowed down differences and only minor points remain to be sorted out.
The Minister said the budget session was succesful in transacting legislative business. He said, that during the session 26 bill were introduced in Parliament, 21 in Lok Sabha and 5 in the Rajya sabha. A total number of 21 bills were passed by both houses in the Budget session.
He said the Judicial Standards and Accountability Bill 2010 and the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development Bill was also passed by Lok sabha and is pending in the Rajya sabha. While the Chemical Weapons convention (Amendment) Bill 2010 and the Motor vehicles (amendment) Bill 2007 were passed by the Rajya sabha and these are pending in the Lok Sabha.
