Patiala gang-rape case: Punjab & Haryana HC takes suo motu cognizance over alleged Police harassment

Punjab and Haryana High Court has taken a suo motu cognizance over the alleged Police harassment meted out to a 17-year-old Patiala girl who eventually ended her life Wednesday night one and half months after being gang raped, humiliated and threatened.

The court asked the Inspector General of Police ,Patiala Zone, to submit a report detailing why there was delay in the police action on the teenaged girl's complaint. The chief justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court A K Sikri asked the IGP to also explain what action had been taken against the cops responsible for delaying action against the accused and the girl's suicide. The matter has been listed for hearing on January 8th.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today constituted a high level team headed by ADGP (Crime)Jaswinder Singh to visit the village and victim's family to thoroughly probe into the matter.

A spokesperson of the Chief Minister's office said that being sensitive to gender IG ,Crime, Shashi Prabha Diwedi along with IG ,Zonal, Patiala Paramjeet Singh have been included in the team. The team would also look into the aspect of dereliction of duty by any officer right up to the level of SSP in the entire incident.

Chief Minister has directed the team to visit the village today itself to ascertain the facts which led the victim to commit suicide.
