Railway Board Chairman Ashwani Lohani said that the number one priority for railways at the moment is the safety of passengers. <br/><br/>In an exclusive interview with All India Radio, the newly-appointed Chairman said, unsafe conditions in railway tracks will not be permitted. <br/><br/>While accepting that the inadequacy of infrastructure is a cause of concern in the backdrop of the recent Elphinstone Road stampede in Mumbai, he said, sufficient funds will be made available for all the safety-related initiatives. <br/><br/>Mr. Lohani also termed the introduction of the bullet train in Mumbai-Ahmedabad route as the coming of a new age for railways stating that increasing speed is also one of his priority areas. <br/><br/>Currently, the average speed of passenger trains comes to the tune of 55 kilometres per hour and that of goods trains is about 22 kmph. The new chairman indicated that the railways wants to increase this average speed first on a golden quadrilateral, taking up Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata initially.<br/><br/>The full interview can be heard on the FM Gold channel of AIR tonight at 9:30 pm.
