Passage of Nuclear Liability Bill to be focus of attention in Parliament tomorrow

The Passage of Nuclear Liability Bill will be the focus of attention in Parliament which meets tomorrow after a break of three days. The Nuclear Corporation of India which operates the nuclear plants in the country says that the terms of supplier liability in the draft legislation are so stringent that no supplier will come forward if it is passed in its present form. The executive director of the corporation Sudhinder Thakur says such a move may defeat the entire purpose of giving a boost to the nuclear power sector. The Minister of State in the PMO Prithviraj Chavan who met the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley has said the government has an open mind on the changes and will be ready to accept any concrete suggestions. He added that government is prepared to discuss any formulation on Clause 17[b]. The opposition BJP has made it clear that it will be very difficult to support the bill unless the government brings back the original proposed legislation. The Left parties have alleged the government of diluting the suppliers' liability at the behest of the US. The ruling Congress has said that the Nuclear Liability Bill is in the interest of the nation and is not a political issue.
