The Congress President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi today said that weak party organisation in Uttar Pradesh led to the debacle in Assembly polls. She said that wrong choice of candidates was also one of the strong reasons for not getting adequate numbers in assembly elections in five states. She was talking to reporters after the meeting of Party General Secretaries and office bearers to discuss the outcome of the Assembly Elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Punjab and Goa. Mrs. Gandhi, however, maintained that the results will not affect the UPA government at the Centre. She said price rise could have been a factor for the party's poor performance in the elections and declared that the party has to pull up its socks for the coming battles in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka. Mrs.Gandhi said every election was a lesson and the party will review the results and work out a plan to correct the mistakes.
Mrs. Gandhi said the party had hoped to form a government in Punjab but could not due to damage done by the Punjab People's Party (PPP), floated by Akali Dal rebel Manpreet Singh Badal. She said many voters were unhappy with the party in Goa and, therefore they voted against Congress.
Asked whether corruption was an issue in the elections, she claimed that the Congress was the only party fighting against corruption.
