Parliament's session begins in Nepal to elect new PM

In Nepal, the parliament has decided to go for the second round of election to elect a new Prime Minister as both the contestants – Pushpa Kamal Dahal of the Unified CPN(Maoist) and Ram Chandra Poudel of the Nepali Congress failed to muster simple majority in the polls held this evening. Care taker Prime Minister and senior CPN(UML) leader Madhav Kumar Nepal announced the withdrawal of the candidature of the party nominee Jhalnath Khanal from the Prime Ministerial race as he could not obtain the required 2/3rd majority as required by the party central committee decision. Announcing the election result, Speaker of the parliament Subhash Nemwang said the both the candidates in the electoral fray – Maoist leader Prachanda and the Nepali congress parliamentary leader Ram Chandra Podyal could not be declared elected as they failed to secure the simple majority required under the provisions of the interim constitution after two rounds of voting by the membeers of the parliamentfor each of the two candidates.He said the parliament will meet again on Friday. AIR correspondent reports that with CPN(UML) Chairman Jhalanath Khanal out of contest following withdrawal of his candidature, the next round of election will witiness a direct contest between the Maoist Chairman Prachanda and the Nepali Congress Parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Poudyel.
