A report of the Standing Committee of Parliament, which was laid in both the Houses of Parliament today, has favoured one third reservation of seats for women in Lok Sabha and State assemblies. The Committee has recommended that the Women's Reservation Bill which was introduced in Rajya Sabha last year should be passed by Parliament without any dilution on the quota and without further delay. The Bill on Women's Reservation was referred to the Standing Committee after it was introduced in Rajya Sabha in May last year. Briefing media on the recommendations of the report, the Chairperson of the Committee Mrs. Jayanti Natrajan said that the 33 per cent reservation for women in Panchayats and Municipalities has had positive impact on the empowerment of women. She said that the Committee is of the opinion that any dilution in the Bill is not called for at this juncture. The Committee felt that once women come at par with men and adequate political representation of women is achieved, then the time prescribed for 15 years can be reconsidered. The committee is of the opinion that reservation provided for women of scheduled caste and scheduled tribe communities in the bill is necessary for their political, economic and social advancement.

Meanwhile, mixed opinions came from political parties today as the Women’s Reservation Bill has been recommended in its original form by Parliamentary Standing Committee.
