Parliamentary panel suggests setting up of International Law Dept

A Parliamentary panel has suggested setting up of a new Department of International Law. The panel also suggested renaming of Ministry of Law and Justice as Ministry of International Law, Domestic Law and Justice to streamline the existing mechanism of handling all issues relating to international co-operation and legal obligations. <br/><br/>In its report the Panel headed by Dr E M S Natchiappan submitted to parliament today said there is a need for creating a pool of experts in various fields of the International Law to be drawn to different departments of the Centre. <br/><br/>The Committee feels that such an institutional capacity will address the immediate need of experts in the category of advisors, consultants, negotiators, drafting experts in reporting in international fora and the multilateral and bilateral talks. <br/><br/>The Committee, however, observed that the new Department of International Obligation and Implementations should the direct supervision of Prime Minister in the line of Department of Space. The Committee feels such a Department will enhance the status of India in the community of nations as India aspires to be a member of United Nations Security Council and also claims to be an economic power.
