Parliamentary panel on agriculture calls for drastic action to improve farming scenario of the country

A parliamentary panel on agriculture has urged the government to draw a plan immediately to tackle vagaries of weather affecting the farm sector. The committee said in its latest report tabled in Parliament said that last year's drought serves as an eye opener for the government. It called for improving the agro infrastructure and management of farm inputs. The panel regretted that schemes like Rainfed Area Development Programme supposed to have started during 11th plan, have not yet taken off due to procedural delays and poor planning. It strongly advocated for taking initiatives on war footing to improve rainfed agriculture in the country. On credit to farmers, the panel said the government should go in for specific credit relief plan for farmers each time floods and drought occur. One time measure like debt waiver and debt relief scheme for farmers are not enough to tackle problems of many years. Government had given 653 billion rupees as a one-time relief to farmers under the debt waiver scheme in view of drought and flood situation during 2009.The panel also said that the scheme of diesel subsidy must be worked out afresh and implemented again on urgent basis. India aims at an agricultural growth of 4 percent per annum to ensure food security to all its citizens.
