Parliamentary committee on women's empowerment expresses concern over under-utilization of funds in implementing Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme

The Parliament Standing Committee on Empowerment of Women has expressed concern over the under-utilization of funds by the states and Union Territories in implementing the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme. Its chairperson Dr. Heena Vijaykumar Gavit told reporters in the Parliament premises on Friday, the committee has made eight recommendations to improve the functioning of the Centrally funded scheme. Dr. Gavit said, there is a need for more efficient allocation of funds to the states based on their performance. She said, 848 crore rupees has been earmarked for the scheme for the period between 2014 to 2019 but only over 622.48 crore rupees has been released, out of which just 25 per cent has actually been spent.<br />'' <br />'' Dr. Gavit said, the panel has recommended emulating the best practices in furthering the cause of girl children by the districts where there is scope for further improvement. She said, re-enrolment of the drop-out girl children from schools must be ensured. She also said separate functional toilets must be established in all the schools in the country.<br />'' <br />''The Committee expressed satisfaction over the improvement in the overall sex ratio in the country from 991 during the 4th round of National Family Health Survey to 1020 in the fifth round. However, she demanded strict implementation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994 to prevent sex-selective abortions. Earlier, the report of the Committee was tabled in Parliament yesterday.<br />''
