Parliamentarians led by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan today paid tributes to freedom fighter and first Speaker of Lok Sabha G V Mavalankar on his birth anniversary. Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Prof P J Kurien, Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Dr. M Thambi Durai, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, former Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani were among others who paid floral tributes to G V Mavalankar at his portrait in the central hall of Parliament house. <br/><br/>Late Mavalankar began his legislative career in 1937 in the then Bombay Legislative Assembly as the Speaker. He also served as the Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly till 15th August 1947 and presided over the Constituent Assembly (Legislative). He became the Speaker of the Provisional Parliament and continued in office till the First Lok Sabha was constituted. He was elected as the Speaker of the First Lok Sabha and remained in office till his demise in 1956.
