Parliament to decide final shape of Lokpal Bill : Pranab

The Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday said that it is for Parliament to decide what should be the final shape of the Lokpal Bill. Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, Mr Mukherjee said it is the job of Parliament to legislate. He said the government had several rounds of discussion with Anna Hazare and his team.

Anna Hazare is set to hold his three-day fast at the MMRDA Ground in Mumbai for a strong Lokpal Bill from Tuesday.

Team Anna had on Sunday shot off an open letter to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and MPs seeking enactment of real and best possible anti-corruption law which should also provide for an independent investigative wing for the ombudsman.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Shukla echoed Mr Mukherjee's sentiments. He said Team Anna should wait for the final outcome of Parliament on the Lokpal issue.

Congress on Monday said that Team Anna's agitation will not have any adverse impact on the party's prospects in the upcoming assembly polls. Briefing reporters in New Delhi, party spokesman Rashid Alvi said that Congress has got deep roots in the country and has dealt with many agitations effectively. He added that Team Anna should show more patience and wait for Parliament to take the final call on Lokpal.

BJP on Monday said it will come up with amendments for certain clauses of the Lokpal bill which has been tabled in Parliament. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Party Spokesperson Sahnawaz Hussain alleged that the government wants to dilute the Lokpal bill.

CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said his party will also move amendments on the selection and composition of the Lokpal and its members.
