Government today hailed the consensus among major political parties on Women's Reservation Bill. The Law Minister Mr.Veerappa Moily told reporters in New Delhi that no single party can claim credit for it. He expressed hope that the bill seeking 33 per cent reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies will be passed this time.

Mr Moily will be moving the Bill for its consideration and passage in the Rajya Sabha. Supporting the bill, Congress and the BJP issued whips to the members to remain present in the house tomorrow.

The Left and allies of both the ruling and opposition like NCP, TDP, DMK, AIADMK, Akali Dal, BJD and National Conference have pledged support to the bill.

The RJD has urged its members to oppose the bill and issued a whip in this regard. The voice of the opponents has been dented with Bihar Chief Minister and JDU leader Nitish Kumar sprung a surprise by suddenly turning a champion of the Bill.

The SP while opposing the bill alleged that it is a conspiracy to prevent Muslims, backwards and dalits from entering Parliament and state assemblies. BSP has not made its stand clear on the bill.

The Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mr.P K Bansal has appealed to all political parties to support the long-pending bill unanimously.
AIR correspondent reports that attempts to take up the Bill in the last 13 years have been scuttled several times. A constitutional amendment needs a two third majority support and the legislation has a clear support of at least over 165 MPs now which is more than the required in the 233 member effective strength of the Rajya Sabha. If all goes as per schedule. the Rajya Sabha is set to create history by approving the bill on the International Women's Day.

The number of opponents in the house is less than 26 . For now the Champions of the Bill appear to have won the first round ahead of the Bill being taken up in Rajya Sabha with its opponents in disarray and divided.
