Parliament resumes after week long stalemate on FDI issue

Both the Houses of Parliament today resumed normal business after a week long stalemate on FDI in retail.

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha could not transact much business during the stalemate with opposition having strong views against opening of the retail sector to Foreign Direct Investment.

Normalcy was resumed in the two houses after the all party meeting this morning on the issue in which the government agreed to suspend the decision on FDI in retail till a consensus is reached on the issue.

This was stated by leader of the Lok Sabha Mr. Pranab Mukerjee after the meeting. This was the second all party meeting to discuss the issue.

AIR correspondent reports that leader of the Lok Sabha Pranab Mukherjee held several rounds of talks with opposition leaders to end the stalemate.

Expressing happiness over the decision, the Trinamool Congress leader Sudeep Bandyopadhyay said that their party already knew it. CPI leader D. Raja described the decision as a virtual role back, Union Minister and National conference leader Dr. Farooq Abdullah and JDU Cheif Sharad Yadav said this will pave the way for smooth functioning of Parliament.
