Parliament resolves to fight terrorism; pays homage to those lost lives nine years ago protecting Parliament; Both Houses adjourned

Parliament today expressed its firm resolve to fight terrorism with determination as the two houses paid homage to those who lost their lives while preventing the terrorist attack on it on this day nine years ago.The Lok Sabha Speaker Mrs. Meira Kumar said the heroic deeds of the security forces thwarted the attack through their valiant efforts while guarding the Parliament Complex. She called for concerted and renewed efforts to cope with the global menace of terrorism. She also called for reaffirming the pledge to protect the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the motherland.The Rajya Sabha Chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari, while condemning the terror attack in unequivocal terms, called for firm resolve to fight terrorism. Members in both the houses stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of those who lost their lives in the tragedy.Later, the two houses were adjourned till noon as an unrelenting opposition continued to raise pitch over their demand for JPC probe into 2G spectrum on the last day of the Winter Session today. As the standoff between the Opposition and the government has not been resolved, there was not let up in the situation since the 2nd day of the session which began on the 9th of last month.The BJP-led NDA leaders including Mr L K Advani, Mrs Sushma Swaraj and others are sitting on a dharna in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue in the Parliament complex in support of their demand for a JPC probe.The Vice President Mohd. Hamid Ansari and the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today led the nation in paying homage to those who lost their lives while preventing the terror attack on Parliament on this day in 2001. The Speaker Mrs. Meira Kumar, UPA chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the House in Lok Sabha Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, the leader of Opposition Mrs. Sushma Swaraj, the leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaiteley were among other political leaders who paid floral tributes to the martyrs in the Parliament compound.
