Parliament today passed the Indian Institutes of Information Technology, IIITs Bill, 2014. The Rajya Sabha approved the legislation this evening which was passed by Lok Sabha earlier. The legislation enables the four IIITs at Allahabad, Jabalpur, Gwalior and Kancheepuram to be institutes of national importance.
Piloting the Bill, Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani assured the House that these institutions will be developed adhering to the global standards. There will be reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Differently Abled persons in admission and recruitment. These institutions will develop new knowledge in Information Technology, the Minister added.
