The Parliament today passed the Code of Criminal Procedure, Amendment bill 2010. This bill would make mandatory for a Police Officer to record the reason for which a person has been arrested or not arrested in cases punishable for less than seven years or up to seven years. Replying to the debate in Rajya Sabha Home Minister P. Chidambaram said that the bill amending the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 would restrict the right of police officials making it mandatory for them to record the reason for arrest of any person and also not for arresting. He said it would also ensure that a person will be arrested if he fails to identify himself and refuse to cooperate in investigation of a crime. The Home Minister also assured the house that a Comprehensive Bill to amend the CrPC which has become 37 years old would brought in next one year to make it suitable to changed scenario of crimes.
