Price rise issue rocked Both the Houses of Parliament today leading to their adjournment. Main Opposition BJP was joined the Left, Samajwadi, RJD, BSP other parties seeking a discussion on rising food prices under a rule which provide for voting. This was strongly rejected by the government saying rules do not provide for it.

The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned first for the noon and later for the day after the agitated opposition rushed to the well of the two houses refusing to relent and restore order. AIR Parliamentary correspondents report that going by the mood of the Opposition it seems that the issue may cast shadow on the functioning of the two houses in the days to come:

’The trouble started in the two houses as they assembled for the day. In the Lok Sabha Opposition members were on their feet as the question hour began sticking to their stand on the procedure of the debate.

The leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha was joined by other leaders in Opposition benches who alleged that the government has failed in curbing the price rise even after holding 8 debates in the last several sessions and their insistence to discuss the issue under a rule which provides for voting is only to give a clear message on the issue to people.

The ruling party members and the Parliamentary affairs minister made it clear that they have numbers on their side but the rules do not provide discussion on such a subject under this clause. Similar situation was seen in the Rajya Sabha. For now it seems that the stand off between the government and the opposition on price rise is likely to continue.’

Meanwhile, the BJP today said that it will continue to press for discussion on price rise in both the Houses of Parliament under provisions which allow voting. Party leader S S Ahluwalia said the government is worried that some of UPA allies may vote against it.

Mr Ahluwalia said that the government wanted to escape a parliamentary referendum in both the houses if voting takes place. The BJP wants discussion on Price rise under rules 167 and 168 in the Rajya Sabha and through Adjournment Motion in the Lok Sabha.
