Parliament congratulates people of Goa

Both the Houses of Parliament today congratulated the people of Goa and the Union Territory of Daman and Diu on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of their Independence. It was on 19th December 1961 the Indian Army launched Operation Vijay and liberated Goa, Daman and Diu from the shackles of Portuguese rule.

In the Lok Sabha, the Speaker Ms. Meira Kumar was joined among others by the Leader of the House, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, the Leader of Opposition, Ms. Sushma Swaraj.

In the Rajya Sabha, the Chairman, Mohammed Hamid Ansari led the members in paying tributes to freedom fighters like Dr. T B d’Cunha, popularly known as the Father of the Goa Liberation Movement and the valiant martyrs and soldiers.

Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of those who laid down their lives in the freedom struggle of Goa.
