Parliament completes 60 years tomorrow

Parliament will celebrate its 60th Anniversary tomorrow. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha will hold Special Sittings to mark the Diamond Jubilee celeberations. A special debate will be initiated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the Rajya Sabha and by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the Lok Sabha on India's tryst with destiny in its 60 year long Parliamantary democracy.

Speaker Meira Kumar will make the opening remarks to mark the special day of the largest parliamentary democracy in the world. Besides prominent members from all sides and independents will participate in the five-hour discussion.

A special joint sitting of both the houses will be held at the central hall of Parliament in the evening. President Pratibha Patil will address the session. A few living members of the first Lok Sabha, including
Reishang Keishing and Resham Lal Jangde, will be honoured on the ocassion.

91-year-old Reishang Keishing, now a member of the Rajya Sabha, was member of the first and third Lok Sabhas. Jangde was member of first, second and ninth Lok Sabhas.

The President will also release coins of 5 rupees and 10 Rupees denomination to mark the occasion along with a special stamp. She will also release three books.

A cultural programme featuring Santoor maestro Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Sitarist Debu Chaudhuri, Carnatic vocalist Maharajapuram Ramachandran, versatile singer Shubha Mudgal and
Iqbal Khan will light up the evening.
