Parliament has authorised payment of over 68,000 crore rupees out of Consolidated Fund of India for services during the current fiscal. The Rajya Sabha today returned the Bill which was passed by the Lok Sabha earlier. Replying to the discussion on the issue, the Finance Minister Mr. Pranab Mukherjee said additional money was required for the social sector schemes, infrastructure, subsidy, security related expenditure and assistance to the states. He informed the house about the areas where the money is being spent. Responding to the suggestion of the members that the windfall gain from the allocation of 3G spectrum could have been used to reduce taxes on the people, Mr. Mukherjee said, money should be spent on development rather than reduction of taxes. He said the revenue trend this year was better than last year and it has given him elbow room for expenditure.
