Parliament gave its seal of approval to the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2012 with the Rajya Sabha adopting the measure Wednesday. The Lok Sabha has passed it earlier. The bill provides for extending the tenure of its Board of Governors of the Medical Council for one more year beyond the 14th of May this year. Replying to the discussion, Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad assured the Rajya Sabha that he will bring in a bill as soon as possible for constituting the National Commission for Human Resources on Health (NCHRH). Mr. Azad said that his ministry is awaiting recommendations of the Standing Committee on the proposed legislation. The Minister assured the members that he will also consult all political parties to arrive at a consensus on the issue before bringing in the new legislation. The Minister denied any official interference in the functioning of the Council. He appealed to the members not to level corruption charges against the Board of Governors unless they have substantial proof.
