Parliament adjourned twice with Opposition demanding discussion on corruption

Both the Houses of the Parliament have been adjourned till 2 pm today with the Opposition demanding a discussion on corruption. The Lok Sabha was adjourned after the Opposition pressed for suspension of question hour to take up a discussion. When the House met at Noon, the Opposition urged the Speaker, Mrs Meira Kumar to start the discussion. The Chair wanted Mr T R Baalu of the DMK to make a brief comment on the resettlement of Tamils in Sri Lanka. This was objected to by the Opposition BJP, forcing the adjournment of the House till 2 pm.Earlier, when the House met for the day, the Leader of the Opposition, Ms Sushma Swaraj wanted a discussion on the situation arising out of anti-corruption protests in parts of the country in the wake of Anna Hazare's fast.The Rajya Sabha was also adjourned twice, first for one hour and then till 2 pm as the agitating Opposition continued to demand a discussion on corruption. When the House re-assembled at 12, the situation remained the same. Despite the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Mr Rajiv Shukla's repeated assurances that the government was ready for a discussion at 2 pm, the BJP members trooped into the well of the House in support of their demand. After the laying of papers amidst continuing uproar, the Deputy Chairman, Mr K Rehman Khan adjourned the House till 2 pm.
