Both the Houses of Parliament were adjourned sine die on Thursday. The Winter Session of Parliament had begun on the 22nd of last month. Summing up the Session, Speaker Meira Kumar said the House passed seven Bills including Unlawful activities, prevention amendment bill, Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill 2012 and discussed Foreign Direct Investment in multi brand retail and Foreign Exchange Management Act.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Mohd Hamid Ansari said the Upper House could take up the Question Hour only on 8 days during the session and passed two Constitution Amendment Bills. During the 20 sittings, the Lower House passed seven bills including Banking Laws Amendment Bill and the Companies Bill. It transacted business for about 62 hours while 59 hours were wasted due to forced adjournments. At the same time, the Upper House transacted 57 hours while 47 hrs got wasted due to disruptions. Despite best efforts by the treasury benches, the Constitution Amendment Bill providing quota in promotions for SCs and STs which hogged the lime-light during the session could not be passed in the Lower House..
