Parliament adjourned sine die

Parliament today adjourned sine die before its scheduled time in view of the Novel Corona virus outbreak. The sittings of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were curtailed by nine days. Earlier, the  two houses were scheduled to work till 3rd of next month during the second part of the Budget Session of Parliament.  <br />''  <br />'' In his valedictory address, Lok Speaker Om Birla said, during the Budget Session which began on 31st of January, 16 legislations were introduced and 13 bills were passed. Mr Birla said, the members sat over 21 hours more than the scheduled time to finish the business.<br />''  <br />'' Earlier, the Lower House expressed gratitude to those engaged in essential services including doctors, police personnel and media people who are in the front line against the fight with Corona virus. The house also expressed grief over the killing of 17 security personnel in Naxal attack in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh. The members also observed two minutes' silence as mark of respect to them. <br />'' <br />'' In Rajya Sabha, while delivering the valedictory address, Chairman, M. Venkaiah Naidu said, the Upper House registered over 70 per cent productivity during the entire Budget Session. He said, 249 issues have been raised by the members and several bills were discussed and passed. He urged the members to go back to their states for guidance of the people in the wake of the Corona virus. <br />'' <br />''<br />''Earlier, the house, bid farewell to 57 retiring members. They include Vijay Goel, Prabhat Jha and Satya Narayan Jatia of BJP, Hussain Dalwai, Motilal Vora and M. V. Rajeev Gowda of Congress, Vijila Sathyanadh of AIADMK. Speaking on the occasion, Leader of the House Thawarchand Gehlot and Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said, the Upper House will miss the retiring members. The Chairman wished for the good health of retiring members and expressed hope that they will continue to serve the people. The house also paid homage to the security personnel who were killed in Naxal attack in Sukuma. <br />

Parliament adjourned sine die

The Budget session of Parliament concluded today and both the Houses were adjourned sine die. During the session, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha passed several important legislations including four bills related to Goods and Services Tax and held discussions on several important issues. <br/><br/>Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan described the second part of the Budget session as productive and constructive. She said, the members sat around 29 hours extra to dispose of the urgent government business though over eight hours were wasted due to disruptions. <br/><br/>Rajya Sabha Chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari said, the issues relating to electoral reforms and Aadhaar witnessed animated debates in the House. He said, the participation of members on back benches in the House in discussions has been remarkable. <br/><br/>Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar also described the session as productive and fruitful. Addressing media, Mr Kumar said, Lok Sabha functioned 114 per cent while Rajya Sabha 92 per cent during the session which is historic. <br/><br/><br/>Our correspondent reports it was first Budget session which was advanced by a month and the transaction of all financial business related to Budget was completed before 31st March.

Parliament adjourned sine die

Both the Houses of Parliament were adjourned sine die today. In her valedictory speech in the Lok Sabha, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said there were altogether 27 sittings spread over 167 hours. She said 126 out of 540 starred questions were answered orally, which is a record in the recent times. She said 607 matters of urgent public importance were raised by the members and five short-duration discussions were taken up. She said, the discussion on the increasing incidents of communal violence remained inconclusive.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari, in his valedictory remarks observed a considerable legislative business has been transacted apart from discussion on the Railway and General Budgets 2014-15. He said, the Upper House had 27 sittings and 20 hours were devoted to Government legislative business. He said on the whole, the House conducted business for more than 140 hours. The Chairman also observed that on numerous occasions, disruption, principally in the Question Hour occurred forcing repeated adjournments of the House.
